I work with 'paw parents' everyday whose dog has been diagnosed with some form of cancer. It is heart-breaking and scary for them. Even devastating. However, there is always Hope even with the severity of the cancer diagnosis. There seems to be a pervasive belief that the diagnosis of cancer is a death sentence. While we can never know if your dog's cancer has spread, I believe in holistic healing (if possible), and at the very least offering your dog Quality of Life for how ever many days, months or years remain.
In the case of cancer, what we are aiming to do, is to whole-heartedly support their immune system and to purposefully, promote cancer cell death through a process known as Apoptosis. I have written an in depth guide on Holistic Dog Cancer but I will go over three very important things to do right now.
Clean, Filtered Drinking Water- That means no tap water. Yes it's free but across the USA it is known to be full of chemicals which are toxic. And, bottled water has plastics which have leached into the water from duration and storage, and is really an unknown for source and purity. So, do your research and see if you can find a water filtering system that fits into your budget.
Whole Foods Dense Nutrition- Diet can be a big factor contributing to cancer in dogs. And, this one can be a little confusing and overwhelming for some 'paw parents' but it doesn't have to be. Many dogs are on kibble which lacks any sort of real nutrition as it is heated to 400 degrees twice. In many cases kibble has been found to have mcyotoxins, microbials, pesticides and heavy metals. If you simply want to add nutrition to your dogs kibble, focus on high anti-oxidant, chopped steamed vegetables like broccoli, brussel sprouts and kale. Canned pumpkin puree and blueberries are packed with nutrition. Source organic if possible. Secondly, they need organic lean meats like cooked chicken breast, bison and even cooked salmon. If you want to take your dog's diet to the next level, consider weening them off of kibble. I offer consultations for dog nutrition, or you can checkout the book The Forever Dog Life by Dr, Karen Becker DVM and Rodney Habib which is packed with lots of great recipes. It doesn't specifically have recipes for cancer prevention or support but all of the recipes are dense nutrition.
Phytonutrients- Phytonutrients or phytochemicals, are natural compounds found exclusively in plants – they are what give fruits and vegetables their vibrant color and also help heal as well as prevent chronic disease. Hemp is known to contain a wide range of different phytonutrients. The most popular of these is, of course, cannabidiol, but in high-quality hemp products you'll also find sizable amounts cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids and chlorophyll. When sourcing, you will want to seek out a Full Spectrum alcohol extraction that is the correct dose for your dog and is 3rd party tested to be free of pesticides, heavy metals, microbials and mcyotoxins.
